How Long Do Nail Extensions Last?

One of the most common questions at Dream Nails — and the honest answer depends on the type of extension, how you care for them, and your lifestyle. Here is the complete breakdown.
By Extension Type
Gel extensions: 3 to 4 weeks before a refill is needed. The growth gap at the base becomes visible and the set should be maintained. Acrylic extensions: 4 to 5 weeks before a refill. Stronger material means slightly longer wear between maintenance appointments. Gel overlay (no added length): 2 to 3 weeks before regrowth is visible.
What Affects How Long They Last
Your nail growth rate
Fast nail growers will need refills closer to 3 weeks. Slower growers can comfortably go to 4 to 5 weeks. Nail growth is genetic and also affected by diet, hormones, and season.
Water exposure
Prolonged soaking weakens the bond between the extension and natural nail. Avoid soaking in the first 24 hours after application. Wear gloves for cleaning and dishwashing.
Chemical exposure
Cleaning products, acetone-based products, and harsh chemicals can lift gel and weaken acrylic. Gloves protect your set significantly.
Cuticle oil use
Daily cuticle oil keeps the nail plate flexible and prevents lifting at the cuticle edge. Clients who use cuticle oil daily consistently get longer wear from their sets.
Refill vs New Set
A refill (also called an infill) fills the growth gap with fresh material and refreshes colour — much faster and less expensive than a full new set. Gel refill: ₹799. Acrylic refill: ₹1,000. Book your refill within 4 to 5 weeks maximum — letting extensions grow out too far causes stress on the natural nail.
