What to Expect at Your First Nail Extension Appointment — Dream Nails

First nail extension appointments are exciting and sometimes nerve-wracking in equal measure. At Dream Nails, we see first-timers every day at both our South Kolkata studios — and almost universally, the main reaction after their first set is: 'I wish I had done this sooner.' Here is exactly what to expect.

Before Your Appointment

Remove any existing nail polish before coming in — it saves time and allows better assessment of your natural nails. Do not cut your cuticles before your appointment. Avoid heavy hand cream on the morning of your appointment. Come with a rough idea of the length and shape you want — even just 'medium length, something elegant' is enough for a consultation starting point.

The Consultation — First 5 to 10 Minutes

Your Dream Nails nail artist will assess your natural nails — their current length, thickness, condition, and any issues like splitting or peeling. They will then discuss your desired length, shape, and finish. Be honest about your lifestyle: do you type all day? Work with your hands? This determines the practical recommendations.

The Application — 60 to 90 Minutes

Nail prep: light buffing of the natural nail surface, cuticle care, and application of a dehydrating primer. Extension application: tip or form placed on each nail, then gel or acrylic applied and sculpted. This is done nail by nail. Shaping: the set is filed to your chosen shape. Colour and finish: gel polish applied and cured, then any nail art, chrome, or cat eye finish. Topcoat and cuticle oil to finish.

What Your Nails Will Feel Like

Extensions feel slightly different from natural nails — a little stiffer, a little heavier initially. Most clients fully adjust within 24 to 48 hours. You will need to adapt slightly in the first day — typing style, opening things, doing buttons — but this quickly becomes second nature.

After Your Appointment

Avoid prolonged water soaking for the first 24 hours. Start cuticle oil application from the morning after. Book your refill before you leave — usually 3 to 4 weeks away. Your nail artist will tell you exactly what aftercare your specific set requires.
